RIP Kate Spade

The fashion icon never got the help she needed, the girl tribe we all need, to come out stronger on the other side and a more resilient woman

via What we can all learn from Kate Spade losing her battle with depression — Women in the World

Reading the news of Kate Spade’s suicide yesterday left me feeling sad and shaken, and as someone who has lived with depression her whole life and has attempted suicide in the past and lost friends to suicide, I couldn’t help but get a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach, “it could have be me. It could have be any one of us.” This article by Sophia A. Nelson Esq. is an important one to read right now.

If you are struggling, know that you are not alone and that there is help out there. If you are feeling suicidal, please reach out to someone for help, call a friend, a family member, someone you trust, and if you don’t have anyone you feel you can reach out to, has an entire list of worldwide suicide prevention hotlines and there is no shame in calling for help if you need it. I’ve used one of these numbers myself in the past and the people on the other end of the line do care and will do what they can to help.

Your life has worth, you have worth, no matter who you are or what you’re going through, you are important to someone, you are loved by someone, and life won’t always be this hard, I promise you. There is nothing wrong with needing help and asking for it, there is no shame in it. And there is no shame in struggling with mental health issues, it doesn’t make you a bad or unworthy or unlovable person – you’re just struggling, we all struggle and we all need help from time to time, and there is nothing wrong with that.

  1. She is from my part of the world, and we were actually at the same college at the same time. But I can’t say I ever encountered her then, because I wouldn’t have known. She truly did make the world prettier and happier with her beautiful creations. It is painful contemplating her despair.

    • Oh wow, how amazing that you both went to the same college at the same time!
She really did, and you’re right, it is painful to think about how much she was suffering. I really wish that something could have helped her.

  2. With Kate Spade’s name stamped on some of the most sought-after items, it was easy to forget that she was just human. Before June 5th of this year, when I heard the name “Kate Spade” my very first thought would be “Is there a sale? Can I get something?”
Now my association with her name has changed. Now I realize there was a real, living person with feelings behind all that STUFF. As much as I adore fashion, I think it’s a shame that our society is overall more interested in stuff than in human feelings.
Thank you for this entry and I agree with your sentiments about depression and getting help with it.

    • I was pretty much the same (except I never bought any of her items), and it’s true, we often forget the human being behind all of the products, the stuff. Knowing now that there was a woman behind the brand who was suffering all this time to the point of taking her own life is just heartbreaking. My heart goes out to her loved ones, I can’t imagine how painful this must be for them. 😦

Thank you so much for your comment. ❤

  3. We all see, and admire, the talent in people but for some reason don’t stop to look at the actual person. We need to pay more attention to the little things and maybe then we will see the hurt before the hurt takes over. My heart goes out to her friends and family, she will be missed.
