Lutska Essential Oils Review!

IMG_1642

After years of avoiding just about everything scented due to my sensitivity to synthetic scents, I’ve recently been trying to repair my relationship with scents through experimenting with herbs, essential oils and other natural scents. During this process I found Lutska, a wonderful company that makes scented products using essential oils. I fell in love with their gorgeous aesthetic and the intriguing combinations of scents used in Lutska’s products.
It didn’t take long for me to decide to try some of Lutska’s scents, but the question was, which one? I waffled (as you all know I do with most decisions!) for quite awhile, before I decided to go with Lutska’s complete sample set, so that I could try every single one and see which I liked best. This turned out to be a great choice! Getting the complete set of samples introduced me to scents I may have otherwise ignored, just because I assumed they wouldn’t be “my thing.”

The packaging is so pretty and perfectly echoes the brand’s dark aesthetic. I love that Lutska included a spring of lavender! ❤

FIRST IMPRESSIONS/THOUGHTS ON SCENTS:

I decided for that for fun I would try smelling all of these scents for the first time without re-checking the information on the site or on the back of the attached cards to see what scents were included, so I could see which scents jumped out at me first. I have a pretty rotten sense of smell at times, due to year-round allergies, so I may get these wrong/scents may jump out more for others.

This is the Dawn to Dusk collection, plus Dark Woods, another of Lutska’s gorgeous scents!

Dawn: Oooh, I like this one! It’s mysterious, and it took awhile for me to detect just what I was smelling but I thought I could smell a hint of mint, almost a citrus-y smell and something else I couldn’t put my finger on.

Midsun: Definitely smells like citrus with a nice hint of mint, it’s a surprisingly lovely combination!

Dusk: A floral scent, but not perfume-y or overly strong like a lot of floral scents. It’s very muted, which suits the “dusk” theme. I really, really like this one! It’s feminine, but not in a “girly” way – more mature, mysterious and glamorous.

Midnight: My first impression is that this one almost smells sweet, I can detect Frankincense, and almost a woodsy scent. It’s really lovely!

Dark Woods: This one is a bit of a cheat for me, because of the name – it definitely smells like a forest, with a smoky edge. Reminds me of the time I went camping with my husband!

THE DETAILS:

Taken from Lutska:

DAWN – lavender, spearmint, peppermint, eucalyptus, tea tree, geranium

MIDSUN – lime, bergamot, grapefruit, peppermint, blood orange, lemon

DUSK – ylang ylang, lavender, magnolia flower, geranium, benzoin

MIDNIGHT – frankincense, orange, patchouli, bay, myrrh

DARKWOODS – cedar, fir, hemlock,, birch, juniper, copaiba balsam, sage.”

So how did I do with my test?

Dawn: Well, I thought I smelled citrus in Dawn, which was wrong, but I may have been smelling the Eucalyptus and Tea Tree oil and confusing them with citrus. Oops!

Midsun: I smelled citrus and mint and I was right on both counts! This one has loads of lovely citrus scents and some peppermint! I really love this scent.

Dusk: I got that it was a floral scent, but didn’t/couldn’t make any guesses as to which floral scents were used, so technically I got this one right but wasn’t specific. This scent is divine!

Midnight: I nailed the Frankincense! YES! I missed all the rest though. Oops! Frankincense, Myrrh and Patchouli are such an awesome combination and one that I’ve used myself when making bath salts – I’m actually surprised I missed those two, silly me!

Darkwoods: I got this one, but as I said, it was a bit of a cheat because the name gave it away. 😉 I really like this one and it definitely smells very woodsy! Lutska aced this one for sure!

FAVOURITES?

It’s hard to pick a favourite! I really love Midsun, Dusk and Dawn, which I didn’t expect! I was originally going to skip Dawn, Midsun, and Dusk because I thought I wasn’t going to like them as much as Midnight and Dark Woods, but I’m so glad I didn’t pass on trying these three as well because they’re wonderful! All of these scents are really nice and I really enjoy them! The scent combinations are very cool and mysterious and I love them!

So yeah, so far I haven’t been able to choose a favourite, I think I’m going to have to spend more time with each one individually to decide. I love all of them! Dusk is growing on me more and more, which is funny because I thought I wasn’t going to be into a floral scent, but it makes me think of a glamorous old time cinema starlet and I like it a lot!

Like I said, I got the complete sample set, which includes a 1ml/0.03 fl oz. bottle of each of Lutska five signature scents, because I couldn’t decide which to try. You can get samples of individual scents for $2.65 CAD each, or the full set of five for $11.87 CAD. I’m really glad I decided to get the complete sample set because I got to try every single one of these lovely scents and I definitely recommend getting it if you are interested in Lutska scents but are unsure of which scent to try! I know that if I hadn’t got the sample set and had just chosen to try Midnight or Dark Woods (which were the scents I was originally drawn to), I would have missed out on Dawn, Mid Sun and Dusk, three scents I didn’t think I would enjoy but actually really love!

Lutska’s scents also come in 10ml (0.33 fl oz.) glass bottles with metal rollers, 5ml to 10ml diffuser blends, 50ml ( 1.7 fl oz.) spray bottles, and sets.

I asked Lutska some questions about herself and her brand, and this is what she had to say!

“I’m an artsy person at heart and I really aim to delight my customer in everything from stellar customer service to beautiful packaging and presentation and obviously an amazing product.

The majority of natural botanical products on the market are targeted at the health-conscious-trendy-suburban-yoga-mom type and I really wanted to make something for people who are a little quirky and different from the rest of the pack, hence the moody visuals and product themes.

My essential oil products are meant to evoke the feeling of mystery and enchantment through the senses. Even though they have traditional medicinal properties, Lutska blends are much more then just ‘this oil is for anxiety’ or ‘this one is for sleeping’…. Each scent has its aromatherapy benefits but is also wrapped around a story or theme to give you something to dream about when you use it :)”

Her scents are definitely mysterious, lovely and worth trying out!

Lutska is based in Victoria, British Columbia, but ships throughout North America. Her products are Vegan and 100% natural, with no added yucky synthetics!

You can find her on her official website and on Etsy and you can also check her out on Instagram!
