Darling Darlene, a Dolly & Dotty Dress Review!

When the lovely ladies at Dolly and Dotty asked me to review one of their dresses, I was absolutely thrilled! I can’t tell you how excited I was when my purple polka dot Darlene arrived in the mail!

Brand: Dolly and Dotty

Dress: Darlene Full Circle Swing Dress in Purple

Retail Price: £39.99

Features: Swing dress, unlined, full circle skirt, short sleeves, full fitted waist band, side zipper, off the shoulder collar with button detailing. Skirt for size 8 dress is about 23″ from waistband to hem and hits just below my knees (For reference, I’m about 5’3″).

Fabric: Cotton (95% cotton, 5% elastane), in a purple and white polka dot print.

Size Range: UK sizes 8 (31-33″B, 25-26″W, 34-36″H) to 24 (51-53″B, 44-46″W, 54-55″H).

Fit: dress fits true to size, but has a nice amount of stretch due to the elastane, which makes it very comfortable! For reference purposes, my personal measurements are 31 1/2-32″ bust, 26″ waist and 34″ hips. I got this dress in a size 8 and it fits me, though it is a bit roomy in the bust, but that was to be expected, because I am an A cup

A flash of blue petticoat awesomeness!

This dress can definitely accommodate a petticoat – as you can see from the last picture I wore one for these photos!* – and it should be worn with one to get the full 1950’s New Look effect, though it can be worn without one and still look pretty and flattering!

The dress is really comfortable and I really like the fabric – the purple is really pretty and the fact that this fabric doesn’t bother my incredibly sensitive, allergy prone skin is wonderful!

I love the cute button detailing!

The one downside I can think of is that I do wish that it fit a bit better in the bust, but since most clothing brands design clothes for B cups, I honestly don’t tend to expect any dress or top to fit me as well as it would on someone with a larger bust size. I might see if I can take in the bust darts, to help it fit a teeny bit better – what do you think? All that said, after that sizing nightmare I had with Hell Bunny, I’m so thrilled and relieved that this dress fits me and I can actually wear it!

It’s also a lot of fun to dance around the apartment with my cat in, which is something probably not too many people look for in a dress (am I the only person who dances with their cat?? I hope not!), but I know I certainly do! Seriously, this dress is so much fun to dance in, with or without a cat as your dancing partner! 😉

Oh! And my dress was sent with an adorable complementary reusable Dolly and Dotty red white and blue polka dot tote  bag (that I ridiculously forgot to photograph, sorry!) which I have definitely been getting a lot of use out of! (Ask me about my collection of hand made tote bags – wait, on second thought, don’t – it’s a little embarrassing how many I’ve made myself!) This bag even has a zippered inside pocket,  which is awesome!

So, to sum up, I would definitely recommend Dolly and Dotty, especially if you are looking for adorable vintage inspired dresses that won’t break the bank! Their dresses are cute, tons of fun, they fit nicely, are comfortable, and the shipping – even from the UK to Canada – is impressively fast! 🙂

Dolly and Dotty are a UK based clothing brand that makes adorable and affordable vintage inspired clothes for women! They have frequent sales, and have a permanent sales page on their site. They also have a newsletter with a coupon for 10% off when you subscribe, and they ship internationally!

Full Disclosure: I was given this dress in exchange for a review by Dolly & Dotty, but all thoughts and opinions in this review are my own honest impressions.

*Note: The petticoat worn in these photos is just a cheap one I bought for about $3.00 Canadian on Ebay, where you can find about a bajillion (well, a few dozen at least!) just like it for various different prices. Considering it was only a few dollars, it’s actually much nicer and softer than I expected it would be!
