Lakeview Fabrics Review

Just after the holidays I placed a large order with Lakeview Fabrics. Normally, I don’t buy fabric online – this is actually only the second time I’ve bought fabric from any online seller! But before I ever even got my first sewing machine, I had drawn a design for a 1950’s New Look-esque dress that I wanted to make with a very specific fabric in mind. I had tried to track this fabric down for a reasonable price for over a year and finally, right after the holidays I found out that Lakeview Fabrics, a Mississauga, Ontario based Etsy shop run by Samantha McMullen (who also runs I Heart Fabric) had it for sale!

I was so thrilled to find a Canadian seller who actually had this fabric in stock! No need to worry about customs fees, which was a very big concern of mine if I had been stuck ordering it from the States! I checked with Samantha to make sure she had enough of the fabric in stock for a large order (originally I was going to order 5 metres, but at my husband’s urging I ended up buying a full 8 metres) and she was not only awesome to speak with, but totally able to accommodate my needs, having an entire bolt of this very special fabric in stock! On top of the 8 metres of the fabric I was originally going to buy, I also ended up ordering 2 metres of another fabric that I was (and am!) super excited about as well.

So what were the two fabrics that I was so eager to buy?

For the 1950’s dress (and PJ’s for my husband!), this absolutely beautiful Doctor Who Exploding Tardis cotton!

Doctor Who is my favourite tv show, which is why I’ve been dying to make a dress with this fabric for over a year! I’m so happy that I finally can! And can I take a second to say how thrilled and excited I am that we’re finally going to have a female Doctor!?! I first found out while watching the news in a doctor’s waiting room last year and I had to seriously restrain myself from squealing out loud with happiness and disturbing everyone else who was in the office!

The second fabric I bought was this incredibly awesome Wonder Woman flannel!

Wonder Woman is not just my favourite super heroine, but also my favourite super hero and comic book character, period. Earlier last year when I was setting up my little sewing corner in the living room, I decorated the wall over my Singer 128-13 with Wonder Woman postcards and some other retro ephemera. I’m going to be using this fabric to make PJ bottoms for myself. It is incredibly soft and is going to be so nice to sew. I love sewing with flannel. πŸ™‚

Unfortunately his particular fabric is now out of stock because (ahem) I bought the last two metres – sorry guys! But Samantha also carries this Wonder Woman flannel, though at the moment there are only two metres left.*

The Wonder Woman flannel, as you can see from one of the photos, is marked as being not intended for use in children’s sleepwear. Since I’m planning on using this fabric for PJ’s for myself, I was a bit stumped and worried for a minute about what this could possibly mean. But I looked it up online and found that it just means that the fabric is not flame retardant, which is fine with me, because I prefer to keep chemically treated fabrics away from my extremely sensitive skin anyway.

Both fabrics were cut in continuous lengths, which was perfect!

Samantha carries a number of other super cute fabrics that I’m planning on buying when I get the chance/excuse/extra funds – like a whole range of Marilyn Monroe fabrics from Robert Kaufman! My favourites are this one and this one. She also just got in some Lord of The Rings fabric that I know my husband would especially love! And she carries five different Doctor Who fabrics! Seriously, what’s not to love?

My geeky little heart is filled with glee and I can’t wait to use these awesome fabrics! I’m really happy with my fabric and will definitely order from Lakeview Fabrics again in the future!

Lakeview Fabrics primarily sells cottons, Batiks, flannel, knits, fleece and minky and also sells some interfacing and batting.

Orders within Canada or the United States are shipped at a flat rate of $9.50CAD, which I love and was a big selling point for me and shipping is very quick! Orders of $175 or more qualify for free shipping within Canada and the continental United States. Lakeview Fabrics also ships internationally, and it is recommended that you contact Samantha for a shipping quote. πŸ™‚

*Note: I’m not surprised at all how quickly the Wonder Woman fabric is selling out, because it was the same with both DVD and Blu-Ray copies of the movie over the holidays! My husband gave me the Blu-Ray edition for Christmas, but he had to hit six separate stores in our city before he could find a copy in either Blu-ray or DVD because everyone was selling out immediately. He actually got me the last copy that particular store was going to have until after the holidays. He’s such a sweetie. ❀

  1. Those fabrics look very cute! Good luck with your sewing! πŸ™‚ (I must admit I’m a Calvin and Hobbs girl myself preferring them over all of the superheros put together. They transmogrify into anything!)

    • Thank you!! I’m working on the Wonder Woman PJ’s at the moment. πŸ™‚ They probably won’t end up on the blog, just due to being very utilitarian and boring if not for the fabric. πŸ˜› But sometimes you need some new cozy PJ bottoms, especially with the winter we’ve been having!

Aw, Calvin and Hobbs are awesome! πŸ™‚ I loved them when I was young but hadn’t thought of them in years! I’m going to have to go to the library and see if they still have the big anthologies of Calvin and Hobbs comics! πŸ˜€ Thanks for the reminder, Elena! πŸ™‚
