Today’s interview is with Sarah, the awesome creater behind Ohhh Lulu Lingerie and the wonderful Ohhh Lulu lingerie sewing patterns! She’s super talented and I love that she not only makes and sells such gorgeous vintage-modern lingerie, but produces sewing patterns of her lingerie, so we can all make them too! Also, her Youtube lingerie making tutorials are a great resource for those of us just starting out and really help to demystify the whole process. 🙂 In case you couldn’t tell, I think that Sarah is one kick ass lady and I hope you all enjoy this interview as much as I did!
Tell us about your business, Ohhh Lulu Lingerie!
Ohhh Lulu is actually comprised of two parts – Made to Order lingerie and Lingerie Sewing Patterns! I create lingerie that is modern, but with a bit of a vintage flair.
When did you start your business? What inspired you to start it and what excites you about your work?
I started Ohhh Lulu in 2010. My background is in Fashion Design, so running a fashion based business was something I was always interested in. I love being able to work with unique prints and textiles and create feminine, romantic garments.
What is your process? What tools do you like using? Where do you do your work? Can you walk us through a day in your life with your business?
My business is based out of my home in Washago, Ontario Canada. I have converted my basement into a large work and storage space, with a room for photography on the main floor. My day to day routine is varies, but one thing stays the same: I’m always very busy! I have three year old daughter who is in daycare, so after I drop her off, I usually try to fit in some physical activity, like a run or short workout to start my day. Then I basically spend the next 6 hours between my sewing machine, cutting table, and computer, as needed!
You’ve also made Ohhh Lulu sewing patterns available to home seamstresses, can you tell us more about that?
I began “Ohhh Lulu” mostly as a blog where I shared my love for making lingerie. A lot of my readers wanted to learn how to make their own so I decided to release a pattern. I’ve found it so fulfilling seeing how other sewers interpret my designs, and I love that I get the opportunity to teach others about the things that I love.
What do you love the most about your business?
I love being able to make other women feel great.
Why vintage inspired lingerie?
I really love the details found in vintage lingerie. You just don’t see the same level of applique, insertion lace, and fine fabrics that they used to use.
How do you come up with the designs for your lingerie? What inspires you?
I am inspired mostly by feelings: a lazy sunday morning spent in bed, a snowday spent curled up under a warm blanket with a cup of hot cocoa… I like to try to capture those feelings in my garments. I’m also really inspired by textiles and prints, especially fabrics you wouldn’t expect to see in lingerie.
What is your favourite part of sewing lingerie?
I love all of the details! I like being able to work with lace and appliques and pretty fabrics.
When did you begin sewing?
I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t sewing! I’ve been sewing since I was a child.
What started your love of vintage?
I’ve always been a big history geek, and also really into historical costumes. I love vintage and antique clothing because it says so much about the time. There’s something romantic about it.
How would you describe your own day to day style?
Relaxed! You’ll mostly find me in yoga pants and an oversized top or sweater.
What is your favourite era for vintage?
Belle Epoque! I love Edwardian dresses and lingerie.
What is your favourite thing about vintage fashion and lingerie?
I love lingerie because it is something “just for you.” No one knows you’re wearing it, but it can have such a big impact on your self confidence. I know when I’m wearing a lingerie set I really love, that is comfortable and fits great, I feel like a million bucks, whether anyone gets to see it or not! As far as vintage goes, I love the one of a kind aspect of it. I’ve always really like to stand out from a crowd, and vintage is a great way to do that!
Tell us about yourself!
I’m married to the man of my dreams, have a three year old daughter and a ten year old pug (my first baby!).
What do you do in your free time?
In my free time I enjoy fixing up my 1930’s cottage style house, and working on my dollhouse with my daughter!
Do you have any words of advice for someone who might be thinking of starting their own business, whether it be in lingerie or any other creative other field?
Carve out your own niche and just keep making!
Where can we find you online?
